Why Real Madrid Possess 'Total Trust' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League match against City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.
During his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a 3-0 last-16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The young player, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a quarter-final berth.
At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica
This talent is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.
He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.
He worked his way up to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and determination he brought to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'
During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time in the warm-up matches.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that set up the clash with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing football, every day you head to training and every day you play a match," stated Pitarch following his debut.
"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."
Handed a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.
The teenager has seized it with performances that have belied his age and experience.
"He's a very quick player, and you can observe his capabilities," said the coach. "He's incredibly dynamic, with great stamina, work-rate and movement."
The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.
"His standout trait is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I realize fans might be surprised to watch him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do what he usually does.
"He will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a player like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.
He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the option to play for either country at senior international level.
According to international regulations, footballers may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a official senior international match.
Pitarch has featured for Spain at underage levels, representing both the U19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are watching his progress with keen attention.
Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. Things are positive with Spain, but I'll make a decision in the near future."
This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Brahim decided to represent Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.
He played over an hour in the two-one win at the Etihad, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.
He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the team pursue future success.
After his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.
"The manager handles me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to earn my minutes on the pitch," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
