United Nations Removes Sanctions on Syria's Leader Prior to Presidential Visit
The UN Security Council approved to a United States-backed measure removing restrictions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria prior to his White House visit the following week.
He became provisional head of state following his leadership in a revolutionary movement that removed the former president in winter 2024, concluding 13 years of internal conflict.
The US representative Mike Waltz at the United Nations declared the global body transmitted "an emphatic political statement" that recognised Syria was in "a new era" following Assad's ouster.
He had been subject to United Nations restrictions while commanding the Islamist group HTS, previously associated with the terrorist network. America delisted the organization from the catalog of global extremist entities during July.
More Penalties Removed
The UN also removed restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister the interior minister.
Syria's foreign minister welcomed the removal of the penalties, declaring through digital channels: "Syrian officials convey thanks to the United States and to friendly nations for backing the Syrian nation and citizens."
Upcoming White House Meeting
President Sharaa's presidential meeting at the start of the week comes after President Trump remarked that Sharaa had made "good progress" in establishing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.
Both presidents held discussions initially this past May, during Trump's Riyadh trip during a visit to Arab nations.
Following that encounter, Trump portrayed him as a "resilient figure" having a "formative history".
His Islamist group HTS operated as the terrorist network's partner within Syria before he cut connections back in 2016.
Prior United States Journey
This week's diplomatic engagement does not represent Sharaa's first trip to America this year. During September, he emerged as the first Syrian leader to speak before the UN General Assembly in Manhattan in almost 60 years.
In his speech, he stated the country had been "restoring its proper position among the nations of the world" and demonstrated unity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
