The Year 2026 Hailed as the Era of the Croaking Craze.
My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was a delight to watch, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Considering a collection of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.
A Legacy of Leaping
Amphibians have been anything but new to the interactive entertainment. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a cult following. However, their prevalence has noticeably increased in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are bona fide Frog Games.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To understand this rise, I performed a detailed review into the last half-decade of hoppy gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The data paint a clear picture: a steady rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The frog's elevated place in the cultural zeitgeist is also visible elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the wave in gaming looks uniquely strong.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
In my opinion, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess built-in appealing traits for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their elastic legs and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a myriad of innovative control schemes.
Several the announced projects directly leverage these traits. Examples include the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the biggest year yet.
If these games perform well—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be witnessing a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
