A youth from the state of NSW has been indicted for purportedly issuing several false reports to first responders – a practice referred to as “swatting calls” – wrongly stating gun violence incidents were occurring at large commercial and educational institutions in the America.

AFP officers charged the teenager on the 18th of December. They claim he is part of a purported loosely organised internet-based network of offenders hiding behind anonymous accounts in order to initiate an “urgent and large-scale SWAT team deployment”.

“Frequently male youths aged from 11 to 25, are participating in crime types like swatting calls, doxing and hacking to gain status, infamy and acknowledgement in their digital communities.”

In connection with the investigation, police seized a number of digital devices and an illegal weapon found in the juvenile’s custody. This action was part of a specialized task force formed in the final quarter of 2025.

Authorities Deliver a Stark Warning

A senior AFP official, speaking generally, advised that people operating under the illusion they can commit crimes with an internet connection and anonymous accounts are being targeted.

Australian police confirmed it initiated its investigation after getting information from US federal agents.

An FBI assistant director, from the International Operations Division, remarked that the “hazardous and resource-draining crime” of hoax 911 calls endangered lives and consumed essential first responder resources.

“This investigation shows that hidden identity in the digital realm is an false notion,” he stated in a shared press release with authorities.

He continued, “Our commitment is to working with international partners, our global allies, and private sector partners to find and bring to justice individuals that exploit technology to create danger to society.”

Legal Next Steps

The teenager was charged with a dozen charges of communications-related crimes and a further count of illegal possession of a prohibited firearm. The accused potentially faces up to a decade and a half in a correctional facility.

“The police's duty (is|remains) to stopping the damage and anguish members of this online crime network are inflicting on the community, while laboring under the illusion they are anonymous,” the assistant commissioner stated.

The boy was scheduled to appear in a New South Wales children’s court on the following Tuesday.
