Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride Will Go Ahead for World Cup Despite Objections by Egypt and Iran
Plans for Pride-focused events and activities in Seattle amid next summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament will continue unabated, even after the Egyptian and Iranian soccer associations raised strong concerns about a planned “Pride Match.”
Stadium Policy Alongside City Celebrations
Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “moving forward as planned” with celebratory programming outside the stadium. This coincides with the Group G fixture featuring Iran and Egypt on June 26th. Furthermore, FIFA will permit rainbow flags to be brought into the match venue.
“In our role as hosts, our role is to get the city ready to welcome visitors for the matches and manage the city experience beyond Seattle Stadium,” said a committee representative.
Legal Background Behind the Formal Complaints
Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, and in Egypt, public decency statutes are often used to target and prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. The Egyptian federation stated it refused to be associated with celebrations that “directly contradict the cultural, religious and social values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” Similarly, Iran’s football federation publicly registered “objections against the issue.”
The Governing Body's Position Regarding Symbols
The international federation holds full authority of stadiums on matchdays. While it prohibits banners and flags with overtly political content, it permits flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” which explicitly includes the Pride flag. This regulation was applied at the most recent tournament in Qatar and was reaffirmed following reports of flags being seized.
- This special fixture was an idea created to highlight the city's proud history of advocating for inclusion and equality.
- An artistic competition is underway to create images celebrating the event.
- Planners have pledged to making sure every visitor are welcomed in the city during the 48-team competition.
The region is home to a significant most prominent communities of Iranian descent, a vibrant Egyptian diaspora, and diverse populations representing all nations. “We’re committed is to guaranteeing everyone experience the warmth, respect and dignity that characterizes our region,” the statement concluded.
