Josh Hazlewood has been cleared to link up with the Aussie lineup for the initial Test against England post-injury worries, although compatriot the paceman has been ruled out

Both suffered muscle problems while representing NSW in the Victoria clash in the Sheffield Shield recently

Medical examinations revealed Hazlewood (34) avoided a muscle strain. The uncapped Abbott, 33, suffered a "moderate grade" injury

Team captain Cummins is out of the opening Test, starting November 21, therefore missing of another established pace bowler in Hazlewood could have proven a serious concern

Abbott was unlikely to play in Perth, with Hazlewood set to join Starc and Boland as the primary pace attack

Cummins, currently healing from back issues, is thought to be scheduled to reappear for the second Test beginning December 4 in Brisbane

Batsman Steve Smith will captain the side while Cummins is out

Following other Aussie squad members, the bowler took part in the current round of Sheffield Shield matches in preparation for the Ashes

Before this week, he was absent from a first-class match for New South Wales in more than a year

He felt tightness in his posterior chain during the final stages of the opposition's batting recently exiting the play as a precaution

Neither Hazlewood nor Abbott participated in batting for the follow-on innings during their defeat in a substantial margin

"We're a week away from the Test series - we consistently choose precautionary measures," commented Cummins

"They wanted to find out the exact situation ahead of risking and potentially making anything worse"

"Uncommon to see him cheerful, so it was good to see him smiling"

"He knows his body extremely well. It seemed he felt somewhat concerned (and) wanted to get it checked out"

Abbott earned 57 appearances representing Australia in white-ball cricket

The uncapped Brendan Doggett represents additional pace options in the squad, offering support to Starc, Boland and Hazlewood
