Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Comments

NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this Tuesday, reacting to latest comments from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."

The quarterback's response directly referenced the notorious bounty scandal controversy from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the Saints.

At that time, the NFL found that the Saints had rewarded players for making aggressive tackles on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.

What Sparked the Recent Dispute

The quarterback's reaction came after Payton made remarks after the Broncos' remarkable 33-32 victory over the Giants. The coach remarked that the Giants had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.

Moreover, Payton implied that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson instead of Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton stated.

Background of the Wilson-Payton Relationship

  • The quarterback was traded to the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245M contract.
  • The Broncos finished 4-11 in his debut year prior to Denver hired Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a period in TV commentary.
  • Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a move that prevented the quarterback from suffering an injury.

If Wilson stayed on the team by spring 2024, his $37M pay for the following year would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was let go, ending the contentious split between the quarterback and his mentor.
