Explosions and Low-Altitude Jets Reported in Venezuelan Capital City Caracas City
Accounts surfaced of several explosions and the sound of low-altitude aircraft in the Venezuelan capital in the early hours of Saturday morning. This incident has sparked accusations from Venezuela's leadership and demands for diplomatic intervention.
Venezuela Condemns Washington of Military Action
Venezuela's incumbent administration has condemned the United States of an act of "imperial aggression," claiming that ex- President Donald Trump allegedly ordered strikes against the Latin American nation. In an official statement, the government confirmed that attacks had impacted Caracas and three other provinces: Miranda state, La Guaira state, and Aragua.
"The sole aim of these strikes is to take control of Venezuela's key assets, notably its petroleum and mineral wealth," the government said.
Venezuelan officials appealed to the global community to denounce the actions, which it described a "clear infringement of international norms" that endangered countless of lives in peril.
Accounts of Blasts and Defense Bases Targeted
Locals reported feeling at least multiple detonations around 2:00 AM in the morning. Residents in various areas reportedly hurried into the streets outside.
"The earth trembled. This is horrible. We experienced explosions and aircraft in the sky," commented one witness.
Smoke was seen billowing from major army bases in Caracas: the La Carlota airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna army base, where leader Maduro is thought to have a residence.
Global Response
The leader of bordering Colombia, stated on X that "At this moment they are striking Venezuela... attacking it with missiles." He demanded an swift emergency session of the Security Council.
Colombia, which recently became a member of the Security Council, stated it would activate operational measures at its border with Venezuela.
Background
These alleged attacks follow a months-long pressure campaign by the United States against the Venezuelan government. Since last summer, there has been a major US military buildup off the country's Caribbean coast and a series of air strikes on boats suspected of drug trafficking.
Venezuela's administration has announced "the implementation of external disturbance" and directed all national defense plans to be implemented. It has also urged its citizens to take to the streets and "repudiate this external act."
US authorities and the Pentagon have not immediately commented on inquiries for a statement regarding the allegations.
