British Extends Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Alert List with Eleven Countries
The UK government has placed eleven further countries to its travel alert list concerning the threats of toxic alcohol contamination from tainted alcoholic drinks.
This updated warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "an international surge in the frequency of reported cases" of industrial alcohol contamination.
Just a few weeks ago, the government had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, following several notable cases such as the fatal death of 6 travelers in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being advised that even small amounts of industrial alcohol can cause vision loss or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hours.
What is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?
Methanol is a poisonous substance commonly used in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and paint thinner. This substance is not designed for ingestion.
While it is naturally produced during the creation of spirits, licensed producers lower it to low, safe levels for drinking through the distillation process.
But in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into spirits to cut costs, and as it is flavorless and scentless, it is very difficult to notice.
Government Guidance for Travelers
Government minister the minister emphasized that every traveler should recognize the signs of industrial alcohol contamination.
"When you are drinking spirits abroad, choose well-known venues and avoid homemade alcohol or free shots," Falconer warned.
"In case something appears suspicious, such as a fatigue that's much more severe than normal or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor right away."
The complete register of nations noted as presenting a danger of methanol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
