At least 64 Dead in Rio's Most Extensive Law Enforcement Operation on Criminal Groups
A minimum of 64 people lost their lives in a security raid targeting the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's records.
Four police officers were among those killed during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives stated. More than 80 suspects were arrested.
Violent conflicts commenced when around 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization countered with armed resistance, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, officials stated.
The UN Human Rights Office stated it felt "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Operation Impact
The informal settlements near the aerial transportation hub is seen as the headquarters of a major illegal networks.
Government representatives said a minimum of 50 of the deceased were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".
Many residents were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
Local Reaction
Residents have compared the elevated neighborhood - home to about 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the operation began.
Roads remain closed across the area.
Gang Growth
The Comando Vermelho organization have been expanding their territory across the Rio state, growing illegal substance trade paths and power in the informal settlements.
Rio's police said over 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the operation, together with dozens of firearms.
Operation Background
The joint operation by various security forces was preceded by a year-long investigation.
Numerous alleged criminals are considered affiliates of a group from the Brazilian state who are currently hiding in the city.
