Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often marked by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

Executive Acclaim

In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.

"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about watching this charming family navigate their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially be part of that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
